You can also search for jobs by first searching for prospective employers in your industry, and then looking for opportunities within their organisations. This is job search for Direct Applications.
So,
Where fo you hunt for employers in your industry?
- Job fairs
- University Career Cell . This will usually, if not always, have a list of the companies that have employed graduates from the university. Often the list will be broken down based on subject studied. So you could find where graduates of economics were employed, for example
- The association website for your industry. So, for example, the national caterers association website ncass.org.uk, would have a list of catering companies.
- Online business directories. For example, freeindex.co.uk or the Yahoo business directory for UK. Though you’re more likely to find the smaller organisations listed here, since many of the larger ones don’t feel the need to be listed!
- Search engines. Simply type out ‘list of <industry> companies uk’, and you would get websites that are purely devoted to listing companies in your industry. For example, ukbiotech.com
- Job search sites. Most, if not all, have an employer profile section where you can browse employer profiles by industry
Where do you look for opportunities in the organisations you’re interested in?
- The best place to look is the organisation website.
What do you do if none of the listed vacancies interest you, but you’re still very keen on the organisation?
- Send an email with your CV and a brief covering letter to the organisation(the email address would be available on the website). Remember to mention that though there is no specific vacancy you’re applying for, you’d like your profile to be considered for anything that may come up in the future.
- Though it is possible the mail may be deleted, it is also possible that it will be saved in the database.
