Sankarsan is studying at the University of Nottingham. He graduates end 2010

What is your course of study?

I’m doing my LLM (Masters of Law)

What did you study before this?

I did my 5 yrs law from Pune University.

Did you have any work experience at the time of application?

No, I only did few internships during the semester breaks.

Any particular reasons you chose your university?

According to Times Good University ranking it stands 4th for law and it also had the course subjects in which I was interested.

What are you most enjoying about your course?

(to be very honest, like all students I am enjoying everything here apart from the coursework) On a serious note, the university has excellent research facilities which you will need for sure. The libraries are very good and they have a brilliant atmosphere to study.

What are you liking the least?

The food here! Please learn some cooking, that’s my advice.

Tell us about life beyond academics! What is the social scene like? Does your city offer anything exciting that you’d like to tell prospective students about? Do you travel much? Take extra-curricular classes?

There are loads of societies here… you name it and you have it here ….. there are societies for all kind of sports, for dancing & singing in all possible forms, and also an Indian society. Last but not the least, there is the  tandoori chicken society (though im not too sure what is being done there!)

Then you can always travel …. UK is a beautiful place to travel with such scenic beauty and historical places all around …… then for those of you who are nocturnal, the clubs over here are really good(there are bollywood nights as well for students and don’t even try and miss one of those!)

Are you a member of any societies at university?

Yes I am a member of loads of societies!

Which university facilities do you really enjoy?

The library is brilliant as I said before ….. student union … it is of much help (you will realise this as soon as you get here) All the facilities over here are much better than the ones back home so keep expectations high

Where do you stay?

I am staying in university accommodation and it is safe and secure and it also makes it easier to make friends in the beginning. But anyone who doesn’t want to spend that extra bit can always stay in private accommodation. You save a huge sum and if who are good at socializing, you don’t need the help of uni accomm to make friends.

How much are you paying for your accommodation?

I am paying around 320 GBP per month.  Your expenditures will include another 300 GBP ( food and everything else) But its around 300 GBP (total) if you share and stay in a private accommodation.

Any complaints about your accommodation?

Well yes, for the amount of money they take they could have provided for more

How do you manage finances? Any tips for students on a budget?

These are the boring yet most essential questions ….. you can always take a loan ….. tell your parents to give you money quarterly if it’s possible and always think before you spend ….. that’s it.

Approximately how much do you think students should budget for per month (excluding rent)?

Around 250 to 300 GBP and 350 GBP if you’re big on booze

What do you do about meals? Cook/ Rely on restaurants/ take-away/ microwave ready-meals/have one of your flat-mates cook for you?!

Cooking is the best policy …. you will be tired of having burgers, pizzas and frozen meals …… so COOKING is a must !!!!!!

What’s the food scene like for vegetarians?

I won’t give you too much hope; its not too goo,  but yes you can always manage if you can cook.

Who is your mobile service provider?

It’s 3. They give the best deals in contract but their network is not too good.

Are you on a prepaid/contract phone?

Contract

And finally, would you recommend a UK education to other students?

No …. haha
